Derek Jeter has been fighting with tax officials in New York over whether he owes taxes for 2001 to 2003 for being a state resident as residing in New York. He claims he lived in Florida at the time all of this was to transpire. The tax officials say he had a residence in Manhattan that he maintained for living purposes during the years of 2001 to 2003.
The court has given Jeter a year to get his paperwork in order. A judge had ordered the tax officials to explain to Jeter why he owed such a large sum of money. He also declared that the state had to prove the case that Jeter owed. Jeter didn’t have burden of proof on his side.
It was also found out that Florida does not have a state income tax law. Unfortunately, New York does and this might be where somebody went wrong. It was a proven fact that Jeter had bought an apartment in Donald Trump’s World Tower building in 2001. This apartment was worth at least $13 million.
He apparently settled for an undisclosed amount. The tax officials kept coming back and saying he had all of his belongings in New York, not Florida, so he should have to pay taxes on the apartment. The deal he struck with the state’s tax tribunal has fixed the problem for now.
